Lost Value
2014
Vinyl
I covered the floor of a room in vinyl and aimed five spotlights from the ceiling at people around the room. I then cut their shadows out of the vinyl.
This work is influenced by Jean Baudrillard’s thoughts on reality. According to him, we now live in a time of denial where reality no longer exists – it vanished with our degradation of values. All that remains is what resembles reality, but which has in actuality been replaced by simulacra. The vinyl is the new fake present, a present where not even the shadows of a former reality remain.
